Hi there! My name is Carson and I am a senior at WSU. I am majoring in management/marketing and like to keep busy anyway I can. I was born and raised here in Wichita and can not imagine my life anywhere other that WSU. This year, I am serving my third year on Panhellenic Council, the governing body of the sororities, as the assistant recruitment coordinator. I am in charge of training this years Rho Gammas (recruitment counselors) and I help Bri with whatever she needs. I am so excited to be able to be a Rho Gamma again this year, because it is honestly the best to get to share my story with women and watch them find their letters in one of our amazing chapters!
When I was a senior in high school, one of my friends who was attending another state college told me she was going to go through sorority recruitment. I asked her about it and the entire process seemed very overwhelming to me. While I was super involved in many different clubs and organization in high school, I wanted to take a break and enjoy my college experience. Yeah, let's just say that "break" did not last too long.
After moving into the dorms my freshman year, I was extremely lost because I was so use to constantly being on-the-go. I heard girls on my dorm floor were going to the sorority information session and I decided to tag along. I learned so much about Greek life at WSU that I was convinced joining a sorority was exactly what I needed. While I did have some hesitations because of what the media and movies portray of sorority life, I figured it was worth a try.
Recruitment week came and I found myself really relaxed about the process and had a great Rho Gamma to answer any questions.I can honestly say that I would not be where I am today if I had not had the courage to try sorority life. From the first night of recruitment, I could tell that the women in each chapter were not stereotypical sorority girls, but they were compassionate, driven, smart, and hardworking women. I saw that each chapter was made up of a diverse group of women which included: ages, majors, hometowns, jobs, commitments, interests, involvement, etc.
Each chapter focuses around sisterhood, scholarship and service, but what sets each chapter apart from the rest is their values. Going through recruitment I looked for the chapter with women I felt comfortable around and whose values aligned with mine. Each chapter at Wichita State is amazing and it is awesome that our members have friends in each chapter.
Throughout my time as sorority woman, I have learned so many life lessons and overcome many challenges that I could not have learned inside the classroom. I have learned how to manage my time, how to throw together an event on a budget, how to be a leader and team player, how to hold individuals accountable, how to be a better student, and have found my best friends! I would encourage any woman to give sorority life at WSU a try. There are so many lifelong benefits of being a sorority woman that I have yet to understand, but can see it through my chapters alumnae group and our active panhellenic alumnae group.
