Amber Hopkins | President

Hey there! My name is Amber Hopkins and I am originally from Marquette, KS. I graduated from Smoky Valley High School and I am now a senior at Wichita State majoring in Criminal Justice and Psychology. Right now, I am an intern with the Wichita Police Department and I work for Communities in School at Jardine Middle Magnet.

I went through Formal Recruitment my freshman year in the fall of 2010. Going Greek has truly transformed my college years and I cannot imagine what my life would be like had I not made this choice. I have found my truest friends, my roommate, and every job that I have had while at Wichita State all because of Greek Life.

The Formal Recruitment process started for me when I was contacted by the Recruitment Coordinator at the time. I was nervous about going to a college where I didn’t know anyone but she convinced me that going Greek was the best way to make life long friendships. I first met my Rho Gamma when I moved into Fairmount Towers; all of the Greeks at move-in were so helpful and I knew I wanted to invest my time in an organization that was so willing to invest their time in me. While in the dorms, I convinced one of our current Rho Gammas to go through recruitment with me because I knew that I never wanted to lose touch with her and from what I had heard this was one of the best ways to build the relationships I was looking for. Throughout the process she was my emotional perceiver and I was her logical thinker; for me, Greek life without her would be missing its heartbeat and funny bone. That week of recruitment goes by so fast and my best advice is start making those friendships early and bond with the women who you will soon call sisters because the women standing next to you now will soon be the women you call when life happens, good or bad.

This is my third year serving on Women’s Panhellenic Association (WPA) and it is truly my favorite part of the year. My first year of recruitment I served as WPA Treasurer and for the past two years I have served as WPA President. Rho Gamma’s are the foundation of recruitment and I recommend you ask them as many questions as possible. They are your “in” to what chapter life is like; all of these women are highly successful chapter members and it is their goal to see you grow in whatever house you choose. Talk to your Rho Gamma and find a chapter of women that exemplify the values you seek to cultivate for yourself in the future; the best fit for you.

With Love,
Amber Hopkins

71 Days!

I hope everyone is having a great summer!!! Only 71 days until Formal Recruitment! Have you registered yet?

The recruitment team has been working hard over the summer. Our sorority women have already started preparing to meet you. Recruitment spirit is in the air!

Summer is a fun time to relax but there are things you can do to prepare for recruitment.
1) Do research on the different chapters on campus. The sorority women love when you already know about their chapter! Plus you can get to more about their values.
2) Sign up for Formal Recruitment if have not already! www.wichita.edu/panhellenicrecruitment
3) If you have signed up, get to know your Rho Gamma and ask her questions about the process. It is comforting when you know what to expect.

I have meet many lovely potential new members this summer and cannot wait to meet more. Feel free to contact me at any point as well! brkitchings@gmail.com

So I leave you with my favorite quote about sisterhood. Being apart of a sisterhood is so unique, it is time to find yours....

"Sisterhood is the essence of all the wisdom of the ages, distilled into a single word. You cannot see sisterhood, neither can you hear it nor taste it. But you can feel it a hundred times a day. It is a pat on the back, a smile of encouragement. It's someone to share with, to celebrate your achievements." ~ Anonymous

Carson Claybrook | Assistant Recruitment Coordinator

Hi there! My name is Carson and I am a senior at WSU. I am majoring in management/marketing and like to keep busy anyway I can. I was born and raised here in Wichita and can not imagine my life anywhere other that WSU. This year, I am serving my third year on Panhellenic Council, the governing body of the sororities, as the assistant recruitment coordinator. I am in charge of training this years Rho Gammas (recruitment counselors) and I help Bri with whatever she needs. I am so excited to be able to be a Rho Gamma again this year, because it is honestly the best to get to share my story with women and watch them find their letters in one of our amazing chapters!

When I was a senior in high school, one of my friends who was attending another state college told me she was going to go through sorority recruitment. I asked her about it and the entire process seemed very overwhelming to me. While I was super involved in many different clubs and organization in high school, I wanted to take a break and enjoy my college experience. Yeah, let's just say that "break" did not last too long.

After moving into the dorms my freshman year, I was extremely lost because I was so use to constantly being on-the-go. I heard girls on my dorm floor were going to the sorority information session and I decided to tag along. I learned so much about Greek life at WSU that I was convinced joining a sorority was exactly what I needed. While I did have some hesitations because of what the media and movies portray of sorority life, I figured it was worth a try.

Recruitment week came and I found myself really relaxed about the process and had a great Rho Gamma to answer any questions.I can honestly say that I would not be where I am today if I had not had the courage to try sorority life. From the first night of recruitment, I could tell that the women in each chapter were not stereotypical sorority girls, but they were compassionate, driven, smart, and hardworking women. I saw that each chapter was made up of a diverse group of women which included: ages, majors, hometowns, jobs, commitments, interests, involvement, etc.

Each chapter focuses around sisterhood, scholarship and service, but what sets each chapter apart from the rest is their values. Going through recruitment I looked for the chapter with women I felt comfortable around and whose values aligned with mine. Each chapter at Wichita State is amazing and it is awesome that our members have friends in each chapter.

Throughout my time as sorority woman, I have learned so many life lessons and overcome many challenges that I could not have learned inside the classroom. I have learned how to manage my time, how to throw together an event on a budget, how to be a leader and team player, how to hold individuals accountable, how to be a better student, and have found my best friends! I would encourage any woman to give sorority life at WSU a try. There are so many lifelong benefits of being a sorority woman that I have yet to understand, but can see it through my chapters alumnae group and our active panhellenic alumnae group.

Best Wishes!
Carson Claybrook
